鵝媽媽（英語：Mother Goose），是一個典型的鄉村婦女，其被認為是鵝媽媽故事跟童謠的原作者。至今為止尚沒有任何特定的作家被認定就是鵝媽媽，這名字最早在一部韻體詩體裁的週記中被提及，且在好幾年間經常性的出現，Jean Loret的《La Muse Historique》（1660年）：...comme un conte de la Mere Oye （「就像一則鵝媽媽故事」）。童話體裁的創始者夏爾·佩羅，在1695年使用他兒子的名字來出版一部名為「Contes de ma mère l'Oye」（即「鵝媽媽童謠」）的童話集。

許多到波士頓的遊客都曾被告之說最早的鵝媽媽名為瑪莉鴣絲，且被埋葬在穀倉公墓。這個說法被學者認為全盤錯誤，因為此人的在世期間不符且沒有任何證據顯示她有將任何故事收集成冊。
